It kinda looks blur tool'd.

Reply FlyingMonkey, August 6th, 2010, 4:38 pm

Way too many shades. Why not try three?

But to answer your question, two is better. (I guess?)

Reply Mist the Moonhunter, August 6th, 2010, 5:03 pm

I agree.
This is to many shades.
I understand this fact to now, thanks to FM.
=D

Reply sonicmaster05, August 7th, 2010, 4:17 am

@FlyingMonkey and Mist No youre both wrong. Two of three shades is a good start but as you develop getting better like Abdie and Me you use about 5 or 6 shades to put more detail into your character. The maximum I use is 7 and I like the 2nd one better.

Then it's too bad their right, isn't it? I studied some of the sprites that I really liked in sonic style, they had 3-4 shades in them, thats when i switched from 6 shades to 3.

Yo Sonicmaster05.

Thank you for teaching me the error of my ways. I will now start shading to one day be as good as you... I hope.
I shall try 8 shades!!!

I got inspired to shade my character more cause i think more shading makes your sprite look better and more detailed. So do you think I should stick with the shading or no?Also give me some C+C on this.

typholeon90, 04 Aug 2010 12:49 pm

i think you could use the new shade on quils and ears

sonicmaster05, 04 Aug 2010 12:58 pm

What do you mean the quills I all ready shaded the quills. And the ears do need more shading.

typholeon90, 04 Aug 2010 01:00 pm

eh...nevermind

@ sonicmaster05 Um, really? Five or even Seven shades? Your filling up a space no more than 50x50 px each? And when you try and add that kind of detail to that little area your sprite becomes sloppy and dull.

I have been doing pixel art for over six years. I have evolved quite a lot during that time. And there was a time where I filled up my sprites with many shades same as you are suggesting. And you know what I learned two years later, less is more.
How long have you been developing? Not to be mean but I highly doubt you share the same kind of experience as myself. But then again I digress.

Go and take some tutorials please before you go and share your oh so experienced point of view.

@FlyingMonkey 1.I have alot of experience in sprites I haven't been doing this for as long as you but what I did releaze that 5 or 6 shades do work out I proved it with my sprite.Everyone has there different style of spriting less is more for you and more s better for me all that matters is that we make kick ass sprites in the end. Also ive never even toke tutorials and ive evovled on my one from a stupid recolor to a some what edit of a sprite.By the time im in my 3 years of experience ill be better than ever.I dont need tutorials to go share my experience also do you think that Abdie wont look better with 3 shades NOT!

Reply sonicmaster05, August 8th, 2010, 12:25 pm

@FlyingMonkey I see what you mean about to many shades cause Abdie used about 8 shades on his hair. But as I said we all have our different styles.

@ sonicmaster05 "1.I have alot of experience in sprites I haven't been doing this for as long as you but what I did releaze that 5 or 6 shades do work out I proved it with my sprite.Everyone has there different style of spriting less is more for you and more s better for me all that matters is that we make kick ass sprites in the end. Also ive never even toke tutorials and ive evovled on my one from a stupid recolor to a some what edit of a sprite.By the time im in my 3 years of experience ill be better than ever.I dont need tutorials to go share my experience also do you think that Abdie wont look better with 3 shades NOT!

I see what you mean about to many shades cause Abdie used about 8 shades on his hair. But as I said we all have our different styles. "

This is very hard for me to understand? You have no sentence structure at all. But here is what I think you said.
1. I have plenty of experience just like you, nearly three years as a matter of fact!
My response: "I have been doing pixel art for over six years."
2. "I have proven through my own sprites that six shades work well. And all that truly matters when making a sprite is creating something that kicks ass! (Like a drunk donkey!) We all have our own styles."
My response: Okay then, if that is indeed how you feel about it then go right ahead.
3. "I have never taken a tutorial for spriting or for pixel art. I have evolved on my own and made it up as I went along. I used to be a stupid recolor, but now I make edits from already existing sprites. Therefor you can see my progression. By the time that my third year of spriting comes around I will be even better than I am now. So as you can see I have no use for tutorials."
My response: So you have never taken a tutorial in over two years of spriting? How can you say you don't need to? There is always something to learn from those more experienced than yourself. For example: how would you understand how to read or write without a teacher? Didn't you take tutorials from your teacher to learn those basic skills? And from the work that I've seen you do, you could use tutorials."
4. "The sprite will not look better with only three shades! Though I think that eight shades is pushing it a little."
My response: I think that this sprite would be better with three sades. However, not with the shades already on the sprite. Contrast and hue must be added to make this sprite look good with only a few shades.
